FAQs
How long does each painting take to produce?
I work in a series consisting of 4 to 6 pieces at a time. With each series taking between 3 and 5 months to complete. Some paintings can take longer - up to 8 or 9 months.
Where do you get your names from?
I love naming my paintings and it’s a very important part of my process. I keep a notebook full of ideas taken from literature, film, anything really. I try and chose names that are ambigious but give you a clue to the inspiration and what I was interested in at that time. For example I have had series’ named after adventure ships, animals in space, moths, lighthouses and satellites.
When do you know a painting is finished?
It is important that I turn each painting to the wall and don’t look at it for a week or two - that refreshed, instant look is very useful to see if anything else needs to be done. Similarly, I hang it at home to make sure it works outside of the studio. Otherwise, I do have criteria that are scribbled on a scrap piece of card and stuck to my studio wall;
• Does it have an inner glow / does it look like there is a light that has been switched on behind the painting?
• Have I broken the surface of the painting / do you feel you are invited to walk into the space?
• Does the painting breathe and hum?
• Is it floating between presence and absence?
•Is it mysterious, with a melancholy beauty?
How do I know how the painting will look in my home?
Depending on your location, there are various options. Both myself and my galleries offer a ‘try before you buy’ service. We bring the painting or paintings to you to see how they look before you commit. Alternatively, we offer a mock-up produced using an image of your space and dropping the work in using an industry standard app. Finally, if buying directly from me I am happy to discuss a refund option with bespoke terms agreed at time of purchase. If the painting you are interested in is held by a gallery, please discuss their individual terms and conditions as they may differ.
Why don’t you do prints?
I am trying to achieve the feeling of pulling the viewer through the surface of the canvas into another place. In addition the slow application of glazes builds a patina that subtly changes, shimmers and glows depending on the light. Therefore I find that the print process both flattens the space and also looses the magical quality I am trying to capture. I do try and create smaller more affordable pieces every year. But also, if you would like to discuss a personal payment plan in instalments, please let me know.
How much will shipping be?
In the UK, I use an established door to door courier with experience in Art handling and can arrange delivery on a day and time that suits you. On smaller pieces, I use Parcelforce 24 hour service. Finally, if shipping abroad I use Pack and Send. If you would like a shipping quote please send me your postcode and I can provide you with a few options.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes! You can pay in 3 or 6 instalments, or I am always happy to discuss terms on an individual basis. Please get in touch to discuss.
